Manchester United are monitoring Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars
Bender. The 23-year-old has broken into the Germany side over the past
year with a series of strong performances for Leverkusen. United scouts
have watched him in the Bundesliga and for his country, where he has
played in midfield and at right back. Bayern Munich tried to sign Bender
in the summer but Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller is
reluctant to sell any of his star players.
The Daily Telegraph and Daily Star revive the long-running speculation that Nani is set to leave United at the end of the season after contract talks broke down, but the Mirror and Sun suggest the Portuguese winger will aim to prove his worth when he starts for United in tonight's Capital One Cup tie at Chelsea.
The Times reckons Chris Smalling has
an outside chance of being available at Stamford Bridge but says he's
more likely to be among the substitutes at home to Arsenal this weekend,
with Phil Jones also close to a return.
